About us

Welcome to our school

Selecting a secondary school is one of the most difficult and important decisions facing parents today. This website is designed to give you the essence of what it means to be a part of the community that is Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School. Nothing, however, can replace the real thing and we do invite you most warmly to visit us, to see us at work and to experience our special atmosphere. At NBS every day is open day; you are always welcome.

"The school meets all safeguarding, child protection and health and safety requirements. Indeed, it maintains them in an exemplary manner. Students feel safe around the school and in the local environment. Should they have a problem, they are confident about finding an adult to help them resolve it.." (Ofsted 2009)

Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School is a self-governing school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster. As our mission statement says - "Everything we say and everything we do should be based on the Gospel values of Truth, Justice, Peace and Love". Each individual in our community is valued as a unique and gifted creation of God. As the only co-educational Catholic School in this area, we take pride in striving for quality and excellence in all that we do. We have 1000 students on roll, 160 of whom are in the Sixth Form.

We have high expectations of our students. We expect each student to work hard, to play hard, and to take a full part in the life of the school. In return we will ensure that our school is a place of good order, of care and of safety where students are happy and challenged to give of their best.

We aim to work very closely with parents. We firmly believe that students are more likely to flourish when they know that their parents and the school are working together for their benefit.

We have a large, pleasant greenfield site on the rural outskirts of St Albans, once the Roman city of Verulamium. There is room for the students to work and play in safe and secure surroundings. Apart from Sixth Formers, our students remain on the site throughout the day. Most of our facilities have recently been refurbished and we have specialist rooms to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum - and more. Our well-equipped Learning Resource Centre is open for business at all times. The great majority of our students have lunch in the NBS Diner, where the food is excellent and popular.
