Art
Welcome to the Art Department
Head of Art: Mrs. A Borrill
Teacher of Art: Mrs. L. Jones
Teacher of Art: Ms. G-M Murray
Teacher of Art: Mr. P. Hearn. (Assistant Headteacher)
Art is taught in three Specialist Art Studios. Each pupil at KS3 will have 3 hours of Art over a two week cycle. The following disciplines are taught: painting and drawing, collage work, 3.D work and printmaking. There is an emphasis on pupils finding out about the work of other artists and being responsible for their own development as young artists. The emphasis at Nicholas Breakspear's Art Department has always been that every student has a unique voice and personality which thay are able to express through their artwork. At the same time we go out of our way to teach pupils the formal drawing, painting and observational skills they will need to help them to do this. The image above shows examples of work from the able student programme which the department runs for Year 9 students.
Able Student programme
We are providing all Key Stage 3 students with the opportunity to enhance their creativity and skills in their Art by running an Art Club on Monday and Tuesday lunch times from 1.10 to 2.00 pm. During this time your child will have the opportunity to liaise with the Art teacher and experiment with a variety of mediums such as paint, printing, collage and drawing. We very much look forward to your support in this initiative.
We are calling for your assistance, as we are in urgent need of any old men’s shirts that you may want to get rid of. Please forward them to the Art department so that we can use them as aprons for practical work. Thank you in advance for your support.
GCSE Art Club
We are providing all KS4 students with the opportunity to complete and enhance their GCSE Art coursework on Monday afternoons from 3.15 pm to 4.30 pm and Wednesday afternoons from 3.15 pm to 4.30 pm. During this time pupils will have the opportunity to liase with their art teacher and improve their GCSE grade. We very much look forward to as many pupils as possible taking up this initiative.
Primary Liason
The Department takes as many opportunities as possible to work with its Primary Feeder schools. The photos below are from a chalk drawing workshop which was held at St. Theresas School in Welwyn Garden City.
