Our bees died out over the winter but we now have two new colonies, thanks to Mrs Wingate of the local Beekeepers’ Association. We hope there will be honey available in September. At present we have goats from Wobbly Bottom Farm, which the students have been working with.
Geese
This is a new departure for us. We have six geese which the students are working with, and these should be available for Christmas. I have orders for three of them already. Please note, geese are more expensive than turkeys.
Ducklings
These were unintentional. We tried hatching chicken eggs under a broody hen earlier in the year with no success, which was probably due to the hen coming from a farm and not being used to the noise of the school. Later, one of our hens which, of course, had always known the noise of the school, went broody. I was contemplating getting some fertile eggs for her when Arnie Fuller of Year 12 came to borrow the incubator as he had a duck’s nest with eggs from which the duck had disappeared. He had more eggs than would fill the incubator so we put four under the hen—and the result is two ducklings! We are not certain what we will do with them as they are wild ducks and are not really suitable for the table.
Cycling
A number of people have asked me, and a few more people signed up at the Year 6 into 7 evening, so we shall run a cycling proficiency course here in the autumn term. Students should lock their bikes in the shed for security.
Boxing
This is in room 63 at 1.30 on Thursdays. Occasionally we do an extra day on a Friday but I cannot undertake to do this every week. Frankie Hobden of 7JBT has been a notable helper here. Next term there should be more boxing as Barney Doherty hopes to be available again—family commitments have prevented him doing any boxing here this school year.
Activity Day for Year 5 students
This was run on Saturday 30 June. The weather was against us and we had 56 people turn up instead of the 24 expected. Mr Bell deserves special praise for doing four woodwork sessions instead of two, as does Barney Doherty who did an extra boxing session. Joey Wright and Miriam Ghebremedhin supervised the cooking and, without them, the day would not have worked at all. People who would have been helping me ended up running sessions themselves and did very well. Kiran Herkanaidu, Daniella Fossaluzza, Emma Bell, Ian Bell, Jake Kingston and Nathan Reddy all worked hard all day and deserve praise and thanks.
Hen House Roof
The hen house roof has been leaking for some time and the situation had got intolerable sowe are very grateful to former students Kerry and Liam Mc Mahon for doing a good job of refelting it.
Get a Buzz from Beekeeping
Beekeeping is after school on most Fridays. The people in Year 8 who have been doing it for a while will be doing the British Beekeepers' Association junior exam in the next few weeks. New members are welcome to join.
Cycling
Students who wish to cycle to school need a permit from Mr Short. If anyone wants to do the cycling proficiency test please see him and if there are enough people he will try to arrange a session next term. We are using the new bike shed now and B. Selkirk is doing sterling service as bike shed monitor.
Mopeds
These should be parked in the old bike shed rather than near the Trinity building.
