Curriculum Overview

" The Learning environment is improved with greatly enhanced computer facilities" (Ofsted 2006)

ICT is a core subject in Years 7 - 9, with GCSE Applied Information Technology and A-Level Applied Information Technology being an optional but popular choice. Students have the opportunity to study ICT as a discrete subject, in addition to utilising it as a tool to promote learning and independence in all other subject areas.Every pupil from year 7 - 11 has access to a managed e-portfolio which ensures high standards of assesment, effective tracking and monitoring of pupils progression. Use of this e-portfolio system gives pupils to opportunity to extend their ICT capability outside the classroom through independent learning.

Key Stage 3

At Key stage 3, pupils in year 7 to 9 get 1 hour of ICT each week in the ICT department. In addition, pupils study ICT across the curriculum. All pupils follow the KS3 strategy for ICT. The enthusiasm of our pupils leads to many of them making use of the lunchtime access to practice their skills and develop them further.Students follow our own scheme of work, which covers all the ICT requirements of the National Curriculum.Topics are studied over half termly period and are assessed at the end of each topic, on a portfolio of evidence which they compile from class and home work, and is awarded at National Curriculum Level.

Key Stage 4

Pupils are given the option to study GCSE Information Technology in which students learn to use and appreciate ICT in vocational and 'real world' contexts, thereby preparing them for employment and offering a solid foundation for continued study at Post-16This course in examined by Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations

Key Stage 5

Building on students' understanding and skills gained at KS4, we are able to offer AS/ A2 level Applied Information Technology examined by Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations. This provides students with a strong interest in this subject an opportunity to begin to establish themselves as a proficient user, and practioner of ICT.

Facilities

There are five high speed network rooms, each with laser printers and interactive wipeboards. In addition we are in the process of developing a school wide wireless network.

ICT DEPARTMENT NEWS

ICT workshops

The ICT department held two ICT workshops for St Bernadette’s and Holy Family schools during the last month. Both were very successful. Every pupil from St Bernadette’s school developed their own website based around their class. Holy Family school pupils developed a lighthouse control system and some of the pupils developed a control system to automate a house. It was an absolute pleasure to teach the groups for the two days. The ICT talent which many of the pupils bring into the school at secondary level is amazing. I would like to thank the department and sixth form students for their support.
