MFL COMPETITION
Last term the Languages launched a competition to design a new wall display for the entrance to the MFL department. Our congratulations to go Lucy Salazar of Year 11, who won the competition with a very creative and colourful design and to Sophie Dunstan of Year 11, who was runner-up. Hopefully you will soon be able to see Lucy’s design as Mr Hearn and his team of talented student artists will be producing the wall display. We would like to thank all the students who entered the competition for their wonderful entries. Ms H Wright, Head of MFL

Given the wider opportunities for working and travelling abroad, the importance and relevance of language learning cannot be denied.
The department aims to deliver a positive, diverse and enjoyable curriculum to enable all students to understand and use the target language effectively for practical communication, whilst encouraging positive attitudes to foreign language learning and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations.
Key Stage 3
In Year 7 all students study French and German. We currently havefive lessons per cycle and students are set at the start of Year 7 using K2 data. In Years 8 and 9 approximately one third continue to study the two languages and the remainder study either French or German. All groups have five lessons per cycle. A small number of students are removed in Year 7 from German or French for literacy lessons and begin their language studies as appropriate.
Key Stage 4
French and German are primarily offered at GCSE but we will assist any student who wishes to take a GCSE in another language. This is generally for students who speak another language at home.
Since 1999 we have successfully introduced a fast track group of more able students who sit one language GCSE in Year 10 and the second in Year 11.
Key Stage 5
We currently teach French and German and are also part of the consortium of schoolsin St. Albans.
The department is very active and offers a variety of cultural experiences and visits, including day trips to France, work experience in France andGermany for Year 12, cinema and theatre visits.
