Accounts by the pupils
On Tuesday 24th January me and other selected students went to Sandringham school for the Red House Book Awards event. We were introduced to their Deputy Head and the librarians of the school. We were then split into groups of ten and we had an hour to discuss the three books we had read. They were: ‘A monster calls’ by Patrick Ness; ‘Grace’ by Morris Gleitzman and ‘My sister lives on the mantel-piece ‘by Annabel Pitcher. It was great being able to discuss the books and hearing other people’s views on the different stories.
We then all created a piece of work we would like to go to the author’s portfolio which is given to the authors when the National awards event is held. Finally we got yto meet the author Candy Gourley who talked to us about her life as an author. We got the chance to buy signed copies of her new book: ‘Tall Story’ and we got book-marks from her. It was a great experience and I enjoyed it a lot.

Cindy Gourley explained about why she wanted to be an author and what inspired her. It was a fascinating and interesting speech. The Red House book event had pupils from a lot of schools. For me it was an exciting and fun experience. It was amazing!

Competitions
Based on this summer’s hot new title, I’d tell you I love you, but then I’d have to kill you from the Gallagher Girls series, win a holiday to Paris and Ipod Touches for school!

Other stuff
Red House
NBS students can vote for the Red House Children's Book Award. We are given books published in the last year, and you can read them and then vote on what you think of them. Each vote earns 1 merit and goes towards the actual national voting. This year’s winner was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It's amazing.
Helping in the library
NBS students can volunteer to help with jobs in the library. Just ask a librarian if there are any jobs which need doing. You can earn merits for this.
We also select particular students at regular intervals to be official library helpers. These students can sit behind the desk and help to issue and return books and help with shelving and enquiries. Library helpers earn merits and get extra privileges too
