Year 10 & 11 GCSE Religious Education
Information for parents and students
Course Information
Religious Education is a compulsory GCSE subject, which is taught over two years. Students study the Edexcel syllabus and are assessed by two examinations. They sit 50% of their GCSE in year 10 and the remaining 50% at the end of year 11. There is no coursework requirement for this syllabus.
We ask all students in year 10 to purchase a revision guide to help them through year 10 and 11. The revision guide is titled, 'Catholic Christianity Revision Guide for Edexcel' by Victor W. Watton. It costs approximately £6.00 and can be purchased from a number of websites, such as www. play.com, www.tesco.co.uk and www.amazon.co.uk
What topics do we cover?
In year 10 our students study UNIT J. Topics include:
Beliefs and Values - Students will learn about Christian beliefs about the nature of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, love of God and others and sin and salvation.
Community and Tradition - Students will learn about the role of Mary, the Bible, Church Tradition and the role of Priests, Bishops and Deacons.
Worship and Celebration - Students will learn about the sacraments and their importance for living a Catholic life and key festivals in the liturgical year of the Church.
Living the Christian Life - Students will learn about the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount and their importance in helping a person to Lead a good Christian life. They will also study exemplary Christians, such as Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa.
A Place of Christian Worship - Students will learn about the main features of a Catholic Church, the role of the Priest in the parish, the role of the Church in the community and different styles of Christian worship.
In year 11 our students study UNIT C. Topics include:
Believing in God - Students will learn reasons why people do or do not believe in God, they will look closely at religious experience and the problem of evil and suffering.
Matters of Life and Death - Students will learn about Christian views about life after death, the sanctity of life, Christian views on contraception, abortion and euthanasia.
Marriage and Family Life - Students will study Christian attitudes to marriage, divorce, sex and homosexuality.
Social Harmony - Students will learn about the improtance of the UK as a multi-faith and multi-ethnic society, racial harmony, Christian attitudes to men and women and Christian attitudes towards other religions.
Poverty and Wealth - Students will study the causes of poverty and Christian teachings on wealth and poverty. They will learn about the work of CAFOD and the St.Vincent De Paul Society in the UK.
