Shakespeare School Festival 2009

Account by Phoenix Hickman: Year 9

When I was first told about the Shakespeare schools I wasn’t too interested, because I don’t have any interest in Shakespeare but I was persuaded to go to the auditions for a part.

Mr. Borrill did a great job in making the audition enjoyable. He did a group audition instead of a one on one this made a lot of us feel more comfortable especially the year 8’s.

The next day we found out what part we got (and with a lot of help from Miss. Mc Meel) they made excellent decisions and got the parts bang on. We had a few rehearsals after this which was mainly working on the opening scene.

Mr. Borrill and Miss McMeel arranged a workshop in Harpenden with the whole cast we joined in with another school that were performing on the same night as us for the real thing, this gave us time to make friends. After this workshop we all had a bigger and better friendship within the cast and the other school. I think we all benefited from this trip because we learnt about how to make a good performance and we also learnt more about our play.

We had a lot of performances after this. Thank you to Carl Davidson from 6th who came to all our rehearsals to help us out. Also thanks to Mr. Borrill and Miss Mc Meel for coming to our rehearsals even on a Sunday. We did the performance on Thursday 9th October at the Abbey Theatre. We went last, so we had to wait a long time before we could perform but this was also quality time to talk to the rest of the cast and also we got to see a few other performances.

After the performance we got some great compliments from other people. Some told us that we really understood the text and that it helped us to perform a fantastic show.

On Tuesday 21st October we performed again twice for the school fans we performed just as well and thoroughly enjoyed performing for the last time.

This was a extremely fun event and I was privileged to be involved in it. I asked a few people if they could would they go back and do it all again and most of them said yes.

A huge thank you to Carl, Mr. Borrill and Miss McMeel for coming to all our rehearsals and coming to support us on the night!
