The Sixth Form

A Level Courses 2012

Nicholas Breakspear has a large and flourishing Sixth Form of which we are very proud. The pastoral care that students receive in earlier years at the school is maintained and all students are offered support and guidance concerning careers advice and entry to Higher Education. The majority of Sixth Form students progress to University, including successful applications to Oxford and Cambridge. We have a new state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre which can be used for private study. We are currently enrolling for September 2012 and would welcome applications. The Year 11 into 12 Evening will take place at the school on the 1st Dec 2012. Come and find out what the school has to offer.

Sixth Form Admissions Policy

Level Three Courses

In order to be considered for Level Three courses (A Levels, BTEC National), students are required to have achieved:

A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at Grades A* to C, including English and Mathematics. Students wishing to study Arts/Humanities subjects at A level may be considered suitable if they have not achieved Grade C in Mathematics, but will not be eligible if the grade is lower than D.

An average GCSE points score suitable for the chosen subject. (These are published in the options booklet for each subject). Most students are expected to take four subjects at AS level and then progress to A2 level in Year 13 with three subjects. If a BTEC National subject is taken (worth 2 A2 levels) then students may choose one or two A/S subjects to study with this qualification.

A subject may require a specific minimum grade to have been achieved at GCSE in order to progress to Level Three.

Level Two Courses

Students who have not achieved 5 A* to C Grades at GCSE, including English and Maths, are eligible to apply for Level Two courses. These are one year courses (BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism and OCR National in ICT).

Students will be required to demonstrate an interest in, or aptitude for the course selected and may be invited to attend an interview with the course leader, to assess their suitability.

In addition to the level two course, students will be required to attend re-sit classes in English and Mathematics for one year and then retake the GCSE examination if they have not achieved a C Grade.
