The PE Gifted and Talented Programme

The Gifted and Talented programme runs as a strand of the Sports College objectives. Pupils who play county level sport or above are put on the register, along with pupils who the PE staff predict will be at a National Curriculum level 7 by the end of KS3, pupils who show exceptional leadership skills whilst following the JSLA or CSLA courses and pupils who are predicted to be awarded an A or A* at GCSE and A Level PE.

Our Talented pupils are catered for in the curriculum by extending their physical skills as well as developing their ability to take on other roles within sport, including those of coach and official. Pupils on the register are also invited to attend fitness testing sessions every term to make them more aware of their current levels of fitness and can vary their training according to their strengths and weaknesses. A number of trips and visits are also run, which aim to introduce pupils to different sports that they may be suited to, or that may help them in their chosen sport. This year, groups have been to the Welsh National Velodrome in Newport to sample some track cycling, and will be taking part in some dragon boating later on in the year.

Pupils have also spent a worthwhile day at Loughborough University where they were able to see the facilities available at our most successful sports University. The lucky few also managed to watch part of an England training session at the new English cricket training centre. They also took part in a nutrition seminar and a fitness testing session.

The Junior Athlete Education Programme

The JAE programme is run in conjunction with the Youth Sports Trust and is a mentoring and workshop scheme for our most elite athletes. We have a number of students who take part in high level sport and the aim of the programme is to help these pupils achieve a balanced life in terms of their school, sport and social commitments.
